Both treat pigmentation. Both are widely available in Manila. But PicoLaser and Q-Switch are fundamentally different technologies — and the difference matters for Filipino skin.
PicoLaser and Q-Switch laser are both used for pigmentation correction in Manila's aesthetic clinics, and both are effective. But they work differently, carry different risk profiles for Filipino skin, and deliver different results. This comparison is designed to help you ask the right questions before your next laser consultation.
How They Work
Q-Switch lasers deliver nanosecond pulses (billionths of a second) that shatter pigment through a photoacoustic effect. PicoLasers deliver picosecond pulses (trillionths of a second) — 100x faster — creating a more powerful photoacoustic effect with significantly less thermal energy. Less heat means less risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH), which is the primary concern for Filipino skin types III-V.
Results and Sessions Required
Q-Switch typically requires 6–10 sessions for significant pigmentation improvement. PicoLaser typically achieves comparable results in 3–6 sessions. The faster results of PicoLaser are partly offset by its higher per-session cost: Q-Switch runs ₱3,500–₱5,000 per session in Manila, while PicoLaser runs ₱6,500–₱10,500 per session. Total program cost is often comparable.
Our Recommendation for Filipino Skin
For Fitzpatrick types III-IV (most Filipino skin): PicoLaser is the safer choice due to lower PIH risk. For Fitzpatrick type V (darker Filipino skin): PicoLaser is strongly preferred — Q-Switch carries meaningful PIH risk. For budget-conscious patients with lighter skin: Q-Switch is a reasonable option with proper sun protection protocol.
Where to Get Each in Manila
PicoLaser is available at Belo Medical Group (₱8,500/session), Luminisce Clinic (₱6,500/session), The Skin Institute (₱10,500/session), and Aurora Skin Lab (₱6,500/session). Q-Switch is available at Flawless (₱5,500/session) and most mid-tier aesthetic clinics. Always confirm the specific device model — not all PicoLasers are equal, and the PicoSure and PicoWay devices are the gold standard.
